The Future of the FM Industry: Embracing the Age of Robots and AI
Brendon Petsch, Chief Technology Officer at OUTCO, discusses the future of the FM industry:
Is the FM industry standing on the brink of a technological revolution? From automated vehicles like cleaning robots to predictive maintenance algorithms analysing data from smart sensors, robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) are reshaping the FM industry. How can the sector – and FM service providers – navigate and thrive in this evolving landscape?
As a leader in outdoor maintenance and risk management, OUTCO is uniquely positioned to leverage new technologies to enhance operational efficiency and safety while also minimising risks for our clients. Although the swirl of hype around AI and robotics can be hard to penetrate, I believe that the time is right to start embracing both of these technologies. However, we also have to walk before we can run and the focus must be placed on building strong foundations in data, telematics, real-time monitoring, and cybersecurity.
AI and Robotics Technologies Emerging in FM
Automation tools and predictive interventions promise precision, speed, and cost-effectiveness. AI-powered systems in security and surveillance now analyse video feeds in real time to detect unusual activity or unauthorised access, enabling prompt responses to threats.
Robotics remains in its infancy. While flashy humanoid robots grab headlines, today’s state-of-the-art is simpler. Basic robots handle tasks like cleaning or grass cutting, reducing manual work and taking on repetitive jobs. In security, robotic dogs, like those developed by Boston Dynamics, could patrol estates. However, widespread use is still a way off.
The significant challenge is that today’s robots aren’t general-purpose tools adaptable to various tasks. For example, we’re far from having robots that can change a light bulb and later that day sweep up leaves. Obviously that level of versatility is something we can take for granted with human labour. Such practical limitations make the adoption of robotics appear far-fetched yet even so, OUTCO is already laying the groundwork to enable future advancements with the data technologies we’re using every day.
At the forefront of facilities management, significant investment is being made in data technologies to support robotics and AI. For instance, at OUTCO, we use a bespoke CRM platform integrating tracking, telematics, and algorithmic decision-making. In winter services, this system leverages data-driven insights to optimise tasks like temperature-triggered gritting and real-time reporting.
Next steps include autonomous vehicles and AI-powered risk tools to enhance these capabilities further. Across the industry, AI-driven platforms are gaining traction, with today’s tools for tracking assets, teams, and jobs creating an ideal foundation for managing robots.
Predictions for AI and Robotics in FM
The FM industry can turn challenges into opportunities for growth and innovation. Here’s how services are likely to evolve:
- Proactive Risk Management:
Predictive analytics will anticipate hazards like equipment failures or structural issues before they occur. AI-driven sensors could detect risks in real time and deploy resources automatically. - Improved Compliance and Reporting:
AI integration will streamline compliance, generating actionable insights and audit trails instantly, reducing administrative overhead for clients. - 24/7 Autonomous Operations:
Robotics will enable round-the-clock operations with minimal human intervention. Imagine autonomous snow-clearing machines or drones inspecting roofs and high-risk areas. - Client-Centric Innovations:
AI will enhance client transparency by providing predictive insights and personalised recommendations, empowering proactive property decisions.
Managing Risks Amid Technological Change
Adopting AI and robotics introduces risks like data security, system reliability, and the need for human oversight. Providers must mitigate these by investing in cybersecurity, operator training, and fail-safe protocols.
The Future Starts Today
The FM industry faces a pivotal moment where innovation is essential. At OUTCO we think that integrating robotics and AI is an opportunity to lead the way. This shift isn’t about disruption for its own sake. It’s also about delivering the best possible service and redefining standards for excellence, sustainability, and risk management. As the FM world embraces AI and robotics, OUTCO is committed to delivering smarter, safer, and more efficient solutions that protect clients and their assets while paving the way for a sustainable future.
