The Top Five Reasons Why Rewilding Is So Important to Us All
Rewilding is important to us all as it tackles climate change, helps reverse species extinction and improves our overall health and wellbeing.
As “green space professionals”, OUTCO encourages and works in partnership with our clients to introduce managed wild areas into their outdoor estates and green spaces. We can all make a difference to encourage wildflower growth and protect our native insects and wildlife.
Here are the top five reasons why rewilding is important to us all:
Extracts carbon from the atmosphere
It is estimated that nearly 50 tonnes of C02 can be removed from the atmosphere by adopting a rewilding approach and restoring woodlands and grasslands.
Improves our health and wellbeing
Being outside and in nature is good for us – humans were not designed to be inside as much as we are. We must provide areas where the air is clean, the soil is healthy and the water is unpolluted.
Protects wildlife from climate change
Rewilding protects many native wildlife species from climate change and allows significant numbers of insects and animals to navigate through habitats and adapt to the changes. Without these wild areas, a significant number are at risk of extinction, such as hedgehogs, birds and bats.
Reverses wildflower meadow and biodiversity loss
The statistics speak for themselves, since the second world war, we have lost 97% of our wildflower meadows in the UK. Over 200,000 miles of hedgerows have been destroyed and half of our ancient woodland and heathland has disappeared.
The resulting effect on wildlife has been catastrophic, with 41% of all species seeing a decline since 1970 and a complete loss of 150 species in the last one hundred years.
Supports the economy
Rewilding can support local communities and provides a wide range of employment opportunities. At OUTCO we recruit a large number of grounds-focused operatives who protect biodiversity and safeguard wildlife.
