Carbon Literacy Training at OUTCO

What is Carbon Literacy Training and Why is it So Important?

Carbon Literacy Training is more than just information; it’s a way to empower the team at OUTCO to become climate-conscious decision-makers. The training covers the basics of climate change, the role human activities play in carbon emissions, and the impact these emissions have on biodiversity and ecosystems.

With climate change already leading to biodiversity losses at a rate unseen in human history, understanding our impact is essential.

As stated by the Carbon Literacy Project, training is:  ‘An awareness of the carbon costs and impacts of everyday activities and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organizational basis.

Here are some facts and figures to further illustrate the importance of training and education:

  • Global CO2 emissions from fossil fuels has increased by more than 60% since 1990
  • Greenhouse Gas emissions reached a new high of 53 billion metric tons in 2023
  • The world emits 2.4 million pounds of CO2 on average per second
  • European countries are among the highest contributors to overall carbon emissions
  • 68 million tons of CO2 is produced in the UK per year due to water treatment alone
  • Deforestation produces more CO2 emissions than all the world’s vehicles together
  • Every kilo of rubbish thrown away produces one kilo of CO2 and methane

Carbon Literacy training isn’t just a checkbox for OUTCO, It’s about creating a workplace culture that champions environmental issues and sustainability.  By participating, our team will gain the skills required to make environmentally responsible choices in their roles, such as minimizing waste, improving fuel efficiency, and implementing eco-friendly practices in everyday tasks.

Equipped with a clear understanding of the impact of carbon on the planet, our mission is to achieve a meaningful, long-term reduction in our carbon footprint, setting an example for other businesses to follow.
